Skopje

North Macedonia's capital, set on both banks of the Vardar; on one side the Ottoman bazaar and the 15th-century Stone Bridge, on the other the monumental new square built in the 2010s. Because the city was largely destroyed in the 1963 earthquake, the fabric of the centre is split sharply between these two periods.
