Ohrid

A town on the shore of one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes; both the lake and the historic center are inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage list, a dual status that is rare worldwide. The Middle Ages are said to have left hundreds of churches here; the best known is the church of St John on the cliff above the water.
