Volendam

Before the Zuiderzee was closed off by a dam and turned into an inland sea, this was a fishing town facing open water; the coloured wooden houses and the harbour still carry that period. The tradition of being photographed in local costume began here, and the visit is usually combined with Zaanse Schans in one day.
