Volendam
Before the Zuiderzee was closed off by a dam and turned into an inland sea, this was a fishing town facing open water; the colored wooden houses and the harbor still carry that period. The tradition of being photographed in local costume began here, and the visit is usually combined with Zaanse Schans in one day.
