The line in the pavement

Halfway down the main pedestrian street there's a line set into the pavement, with an inscription reading in both directions. On one side of the line the Ottoman bazaar begins, on the other the Austro-Hungarian city — a century changes in a hundred metres.

Sarajevo roses

Here and there on the pavement you notice flower-shaped hollows filled with red. They aren't decoration: they're the marks left in the asphalt by mortar shells that fell during the siege, later filled in with red resin.

A mosque, an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral and a synagogue sit within a few hundred metres of each other. It isn't a tourism line — it's the direct result of the city's demographics, and the call to prayer and the bells are heard on the same afternoon.

The age of the tram

The tram line running along the bottom of the valley is one of Europe's oldest urban lines: opened as a horse-drawn tram in 1885, electrified ten years later. It still runs the same route today, as the backbone of the city.

The smoke that settles over the valley in winter

The city sits at the bottom of a narrow valley, and in winter cold air sits over it like a lid. Smoke from coal-heated homes can't rise, and it builds up in the valley — in winter, Sarajevo ranks among the most polluted cities in the world.

Bosnian coffee

Coffee here arrives on a copper tray: a džezva, a small cup, a glass of water and a piece of lokum beside it. It resembles Turkish coffee but the way it's drunk is different, and the point isn't really the coffee — it's the time that tray spends on the table.

How to order ćevapi

The city's signature dish is ćevapi: small minced-meat sausages in flatbread, served with onion and kajmak. You don't choose a dish name off the menu, you say a number — five or ten.

Drinking from the Sebilj

Drink from the wooden fountain in the middle of the square and, so the story goes, you'll come back to Sarajevo one day — that's what the whole city tells visitors. The fountain works and the water is drunk.

The tunnel under the airport

During the siege, the city's only connection to the outside world was a tunnel dug by hand under the airport runway. Its entrance was in a house's basement, and that house is a museum today.

The library that burned

The colourfully fronted building on the riverbank was the city's library. It was burned in 1992 and most of the collection turned to ash; the building reopened after years of restoration.

The corner by the bridge

The assassination that set off the First World War happened in 1914 on the corner at the end of this bridge. The spot is more ordinary than you'd expect: a small bridge, a narrow pavement and an old building on the corner.

The bobsled track in the forest

On the mountain above the city, the bobsled track from the 1984 Winter Olympics is still standing: a concrete channel winding for kilometres through the forest, covered end to end in graffiti. Abandoned, but not demolished.

The Ramadan cannon from the ramparts

Through Ramadan, sunset is announced each evening with a shot fired from the fortress ramparts above the city. The sound echoes across the whole valley, and the tables below start at the same moment.
