City guide
Ravenna
In the 5th and 6th centuries the city served as capital first of the Western Roman Empire and then of Byzantine rule in Italy. Eight Early Christian monuments surviving from that period are on the UNESCO World Heritage list; the golden mosaics of San Vitale and Galla Placidia are among the best-preserved of their age. Dante Alighieri's tomb is here as well.
