In Italy a meal is a ritual and coffee a habit; city centres are small and walkable. There is a line on the bill you will not expect and zones in the centres that vehicles cannot enter. What follows applies across the whole country.

The intercity rail network is good and high-speed trains link the big cities. Vehicle traffic is restricted in historic centres; walking is usually the only way.

A table charge called "coperto" is normal on the bill and should not be confused with a tip. Coffee drunk standing at the bar costs less than the same coffee at a table.

Churches are working places of worship and ask for covered clothing: shoulders and knees. A visitor in a sleeveless top is turned away at the door in summer.

The currency is the euro; cards are common but cash is practical with small traders. Sockets are the same type as in Türkiye but some are narrow. Street fountains are drinkable.
