Preparing for Belgrade

Serbia is outside Schengen and uses its own currency. Cyrillic and Latin scripts are used side by side and hospitality is strong. What follows applies across the whole country.

Getting around and the border

Travel between cities is mostly by coach; the rail network is slow. Border crossings need particular care where Kosovo is involved.

Money and cards

The currency is the Serbian dinar. Cards work in city centres; cash is needed with small traders, in markets and in taxis.

Script and everyday etiquette

Cyrillic and Latin are used together; official signs are mostly Cyrillic while menus may be Latin. Hospitality is strong and an offer is not really refusable.

Practical notes

Sockets are the same type as in Türkiye. Tap water is drinkable in the cities. Pharmacies are marked "АПОТЕКА" or "APOTEKA".

In an emergency

Emergency call: 112One number for police, ambulance and fire. It works across the region and follows the same standard as in Türkiye.
Reporting a theft: A report at a police stationAn insurance claim does not move without this formal document. On a group tour, do it with your tour leader.
Pharmacy: АПОТЕКА / APOTEKALarger cities have one open at night; the rota is posted at the door.
Lost passport: Your country's missionReport the loss to the police first, then apply to your mission. On a group tour, tell your tour leader immediately.
