Experiences in Seville

Not a list of places that sell tickets. The things a resident knows and a visitor is startled by: street cats, curtainless windows, a drink that only appears in winter. None of it is for sale; it is simply described.

The orange trees in the street

The streets are lined end to end with bitter orange trees and the fruit really is inedible. When they blossom in spring (the azahar) the whole centre fills with that scent.

Living with the heat

The summer heat is among the fiercest in Europe and the city is built around it: the middle of the day is dead time and life shifts to the evening and the night. Going along with it, rather than resisting, saves the day.

The courtyard

Houses face inwards rather than out: at the centre there is a courtyard with plants, tiles and often a fountain. Doors are left open and you can see that courtyard through the iron gate (the cancela).

Tapas standing up, on the move

Tapas is not a menu but a way of walking: one plate and one drink at each bar, then on to the next. Sitting down and ordering three dishes is getting it wrong from the start.

Flamenco: peña versus tablao

The tourist show (the tablao) and the flamenco played in a neighbourhood club (the peña) are not the same thing. The second is not advertised, starts late and expects silence from the room.

An evening on the Guadalquivir

The walkway that runs along both banks is the coolest part of the city at the end of a hot day. Rowing boats, runners, and people waiting on the bridge for the sun to go down.

Crossing to Triana

The far bank considers itself a separate place: the quarter of the tile makers, the sailors and the flamenco families. Five minutes over the bridge from the centre, and a completely different air.

Semana Santa

Through the week before Easter the brotherhoods carry heavy floats on their shoulders around the city; the crowd falls quiet and streets close for hours. The one week of the year when the city changes completely.

The Feria de Abril

In April a temporary city of tents goes up on the far bank: around a thousand marquees, horse carriages, sevillanas and music through the night. But most of the tents are private.
